History

The first Dancer of the Year was held back in 1998 at the National Championships in the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork. The idea for the 'DOTY', as it is now affectionately known as, was created by Alan Healy of Dance Supreme.

The title is the only one of its kind in Ireland and was introduced to allow all the top Championship dancers in the various age groups the opportunity to compete against each other in a 'one-off' annual event.

It was also a way of getting groups to appreciate the excellent talent that exists in this sport.

Although their is only one winner on the day, qualifying is, in itself a huge achievement for any young Freestyle dancer.

How do you qualify

To qualify for the 'Dancer of the Year' final at the 'National Championships', Dance Supreme run a number of 'one-day' and weekend competitions throughout the year.

All Championship Solo winners at these events automatically qualify for the DOTY. If a dancer has already qualified then the 2nd place winner on that day goes through.

Its as simple as that!

How is it judged

Dance Supreme is renowned for its fair and easy to understand judging system.

The 'Dancer of the Year' is judged by the National Championship Adjudicators and where possible, the qualified Freestyle teachers that have no entry in the DOTY.

Each dancer will perform a 20second dance-on in the first of 2 rounds.

Points from 1-10 are awarded in the first round then,  the top 10 or a number agreed by the scrutineer, are recalled for a final dance-on.

If there is a tie after 2 rounds then they will dance until a clear winner is decided by the Judges in another dance-on.

What do you win

Lots and lots of stuff!!

Dance Supreme will reward the Dancer of the Year with the 'DOTY Perpetual Cup', the 'DOTY Crystal Trophy', the 'DOTY Award for Outstanding Achievement in Freestyle Dance', 'free Dance Supreme competitions for 1 year', a sound system, £100 to your club for tuition, sponsored goodies and loads more great stuff.
