History

The first Dancer of the Year was held back in 1998 at the National Championships in the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork. The idea for 'DOTY', as it is now affectionately known as, was created by Alan Healy of Dance Supreme.

The title is the only one of its kind in Ireland and was originally introduced to allow all Championship dancers in the various age groups the opportunity to compete against each other in a 'one-off' special annual event.

Today the competition has grown so big that we have had to break it down into three sections, Junior DOTY, Senior Girl DOTY and Senior Boy DOTY.

How do you qualify?

To qualify for the Grand Final of 'Dancer of the Year', Championship dancers must be placed first or second in any Dance Supreme competition that is held throughout that year. Heats are also held in England, Scotland and Wales to attract the very best dancers.

Its as simple as that!

How is it judged?

The 'Dancer of the Year' is judged by a panel of professional Adjudicators and where possible, the qualified Freestyle teachers that have no entry in DOTY.

Each dancer will perform a 30second dance-on in the first of 2 rounds.

Points from 1-10 are awarded in the first round then, the top 10 or a number agreed by the scrutineer, are recalled for a final dance-on.

If there is a tie after 2 rounds then they will dance until a clear winner is decided by the Judges in another dance-on.

What do you win?

Lots and lots of stuff!!

Dance Supreme will reward the Dancer of the Year with the 'DOTY Perpetual Cup', the 'DOTY Crystal Trophy', the 'DOTY Award for Outstanding Achievement in Freestyle Dance', 'free Dance Supreme competitions for 1 year', a sound system, and a whole lot more!!
